Learning Objectives

Students will be able to…

  • ✓Measure mass in grams and kilograms.
  • ✓Measure volume in liters and milliliters.
  • ✓Estimate with the right unit.
  • ✓Choose the best unit.
Essential Question

A paper clip and an elephant both have mass — but you’d never measure them the same way! How do we measure how heavy something is, and how much a container holds?

QUESTION 1
Would you measure the mass of an apple in grams or kilograms?
Grams (an apple is fairly light).
QUESTION 2
How many milliliters are in 1 liter?
1,000.
QUESTION 3
Is a full bathtub of water closer to 2 liters or 200 liters?
200 liters (a bathtub holds a lot of water).

Going deeper? Measure and solve.

Have students weigh objects and measure liquids, then solve problems like “how much heavier is A than B?” A printable mass-and-volume sheet is in the Math library.
